Coworking in Shanghai

China's most internationally wired city and the softest landing for a first China base. Nomads cluster in Jing'an, the former French Concession and Xuhui: walkable, cafe-dense, metro everywhere. Domestic internet is fast, but the real catch is the Great Firewall, so line up a VPN or an offshore-routing eSIM before you land. English gets you further here than anywhere else on the mainland, and Alipay and WeChat Pay now bind foreign cards, so a near cash-free stay finally works for visitors.

Visa

Shanghai sits in the Yangtze River Delta 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit zone: eligible travelers continuing to a third country or region (Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan all count) can enter without a visa. Many nationalities now also get 30-day unilateral visa-free entry, though the list changes and some passports, US among them, are not on it. Neither route permits working for a local employer, so confirm the current rules for your nationality and route before booking.
