Shanghai sits in the Yangtze River Delta 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit zone: eligible travelers continuing to a third country or region (Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan all count) can enter without a visa. Many nationalities now also get 30-day unilateral visa-free entry, though the list changes and some passports, US among them, are not on it.
