Healthcare in Portugal

What care costs in Portugal

Mixed confidence

Portugal runs a tax-funded, universal public system (SNS) alongside a large private hospital sector (CUF, Hospital da Luz, Lusíadas, Trofa Saúde) that residents typically use via employer/personal insurance or self-pay for faster access and English-speaking staff, concentrated in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve.

    $91($57–$143)

Private GP / general-medicine consultation, single visit, no labs. Independent Lisbon clinics run roughly €50-80; premium/specialist-level consults at a top private hospital (Hospital CUF Descobertas) list at €104-125, and CUF's home-visit clínica geral is €100 flat. · via Hospital CUF Descobertas, Tabela de Preços Particulares (official private price list, published 2026-02-01)

Coverage

Since a Dec-2024 law change, non-resident foreigners without an SNS "utente" number no longer get routine/non-emergency SNS care, but genuine emergencies are still treated (EU visitors get SNS rates via EHIC; non-EU visitors and most nomads get billed and should rely on travel/nomad insurance such as SafetyWing or Genki, which typically covers the emergency episode above the plan's deductible). Planned/elective care, a GP visit, MRI, dental crown, or screening colonoscopy, is essentially self-pay for a visiting nomad at the private cash rates below, and is generally excluded or capped under nomad/travel plans as non-emergency, medical-tourism-style care. This is informational, not coverage advice, check the specific policy.

Accreditation

Portugal has JCI-accredited private hospitals, including Hospital de Cascais (Grupo Ribera) and HPA Health Group's Algarve hospitals in Alvor and Gambelas; accreditation status can lapse or renew on a 3-year cycle, so verify current status before relying on it.
