Getting Paid and Spending Abroad: Wise vs Revolut vs Local Banks
The problem: your home bank is expensive abroad
Spend on a normal home card overseas and you usually pay twice: a poor exchange rate baked into the conversion, plus foreign-transaction and ATM fees. Over a year of nomad spending that adds up to real money. The fix is a multi-currency account built for it.
Wise and Revolut, the two workhorses
- Wise (formerly TransferWise) gives you a multi-currency account and card that converts at the real mid-market rate with a small, transparent fee. It is the reference for moving money between currencies and getting paid in several. If you invoice clients abroad, Wise is hard to beat.
- Revolut is more of an all-in-one app: multi-currency spending, budgeting, and extras, with free currency exchange up to a monthly limit and fees beyond it. Great as a daily spending card.
Many nomads carry both: Wise for receiving and converting larger sums at the best rate, Revolut for day-to-day spending and its app.
Keep a local option too
- Keep one home-country card and account open for anything that rejects fintech cards (some airlines, hotels, and government portals).
- A local bank account is worth it only if you settle somewhere for a while or need to pay local rent and bills.
Habits that save real money
- Always pay in the local currency, never "your home currency", when a terminal offers the choice. Choosing your home currency triggers dynamic currency conversion at a terrible rate.
- Withdraw larger amounts less often to spread flat ATM fees, and use fee-friendly ATMs.
- Hold a buffer in a couple of major currencies so you are not force-converting at a bad moment.
- Watch the monthly free-exchange limits on fintech free tiers, and top up before a big spend.
